Cock-A-Doodle-Doooooooooooo!!!

   GalloFace

The other day I finally figured out WHERE to turn off to get to Migriño beach …that after an unsuccessful, however adventurous, drive into the Baja backcoutry the day before.  After stopping at my first spot & seeing no fish I ran down the beach in my pickup, up over a small hill and there was what I had wanted to see …a mess of pelicans, 50 or more, diving and on the surface in a big wad letting me know there was something to eat!  Getting to the spot from the South I saw a Jeep approaching from the North and we converged on the dune about 100 meters apart.  The problem was there were SO many Pelicans it was hard to get a cast in without fearing hooking up one of these great birds!  Pelicans are notorious for getting tangled in your line, especially the new braided lines that are much smaller diameter!  Finally an opening and I make a short 75 meter cast!  On the retrieve I get the classic comb of a Roosterfish coming out of the water and the fish swiping back and forth at my white /redhead Jensen Ballyhoo lure! Swing and a miss …Strike One!  Second cast, another Rooster is on the chase  …and another swing & miss … Strike Two! The Jeep guy down the beach yells “Gallo, Gallo, Gallo” as his reel screams bloody murder and he is hooked up to a Roosterfish!!!

Next cast I weave the lure thru a small gap in the eating pelicans and start to rip the lure at warp speed …this lure is moving at 53” every handle crank and I’m reeling as fast as I can!!! Suddenly a nice comb comes up from the depths and begins that zig zag attack with mouth agape and boom I’m hooked up to my first Rooster of this trip!!!  The fish ran for about two minutes, briefly got tangled up with a pelican, and then was landed after about a 20 minute fight on light rod and line!!! After a few pix takenby my new amigo, Richard (the Jeep guy), this Roosterfish (Pez Gallo) was released in great shape to fight another day!!!

Cock-A-Doodle-DOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Check out the video below!  sorry about the angles and shakiness as I had my iPhone & rod in the same hand and then jammed it in the sand for the last bit with my LifeProof case on it!!! jajajaja
