Sharks attack Tunas with Picante Fleet

One of the things about fishing in saltwater for long is you will usually have a Barracuda or shark eat what you are catching. In the Sea of Cortez I have always been fortunate for the past 20 years until this last trip with the Picante Fleet. Leaving from Cabo San Lucas Marina we headed out for a day of Yellowfin Tuna and perhaps a few Striped Marlin. Standard fare for a trip in June out of Cabo.
As the day played out I hooked up with eleven 15-25lb Yellowfin Tunas and 2 Striped Marlin on lures and live bait in kind. The last 3 tunas though were savagely attacked by sharks. Makos I had thought at first but folks on Twitter and Facebook are telling me no, so maybe a Whaler or some other kind. Either way the Tuna were just as attacked as ever and not in the usual way where the shark cuts them off behind the gill plate but EATING THE TUNA WHOLE! Three sharks got impaled on the trolling lure and I fought them for awhile until they cut thru the 200lb mono leader! CRAZY! Hope you all enjoy the Episode which airs Thursday March 1, 2012 at 10:30 AM EST/ 7:30 AM PST on NBC Sports
Pike Eats Pike!!!
Ok this isn’t a story from Baja but it has a saltwater flavor. Most of us that have spent much time fishing the salt have had a barracuda or shark eat what we were catching. Check out the pix of this guy reeling in a 36″ Northern Pike and a 56″ Pike weighing 55 pounds eats it. He landed them both in a big net WOW!!!

Denver, Colorado – (February 28, 2012) 5th day productions, a Colorado based video production company, announced today that it has received a prestigious Telly Award for its Season 1 programming and production of “Fish the Baja” a nationally broadcast TV series shot exclusively in Baja California & airing nationwide on NBC Sports Network.
The video that won was 1 out of 13,000 videos submitted from 50 states and 37 countries. Dave is surf fishing for Roosterfish inBaja Californiaand lands a 50lb beast, then releases it back into the water, but not after struggling to lift it.
Dave Maynard, Executive Producer and Host of the show, was thrilled with the win. “Winning a Telly Award has huge significance to us in the production industry. The Telly is judged by a large group of industry professionals so it shows us that we are on the right track with our production quality and style”. “Fish the Baja” was nominated for 3 Telly Awards, of which two results are still pending. One of the nominations is for a “People’s Telly” which will be voted on soon via You Tube with the results sometime around the end of March.
This is Maynard’s 3rd Telly Award, having won two previously as Producer and Host of the nationally broadcast series “Fishing Across America”.
“I would like to thank Sterling Johnson at Edit Denver for his excellent work and Wesley Brough for guiding me to just the right spot to capture the spectacular footage and that monster Roosterfish”, said Maynard.

Panga fishing in Baja…

Discover Where It All Started in Cabo San Lucas
I once asked a boat captain in Cabo why the dolphins jump out of the water. He told me that they were “felis”, the Spanish word for happy! Just watching them for awhile would make most people come to that conclusion.
A sure way to get up close and personal with a pod of dolphins is to fish out of a small boat in the Baja.
The boat of the Baja, the Panga, is where it all started as far as boats are concerned in the Magnificent Peninsula.
This is the work horse to this day of the commercial fishing fleets, whether is inside the Sea of Cortez for finned species or in Magdelina Bay for crabs, scallops or lobsters.
My first fishing trip in Baja was on a Panga and with a guy named Juan Montez and it is still a trip I make nearly every time I go to Cabo San Lucas. Juan is a great guy that REALLY loves to fish and that come out in how how hard he works while on the water. He always has a fantastic attitude and is quick with a joke and usually sings throughout the day as you troll for or cast to fish. Most of my firsts in Baja have been with Juan!
My first Marlin, first Roosterfish, my first yellowfin Tuna, first saltwater fish on the fly, a very nice Dorado, and many other adventures with friends and family.
Don’t miss the GoPro / Troll Pro footage of the Tuna and Striped Marlin! Cool!
It was a forgone conclusion that as I began filming “Fish the Baja” that Juan and I would fish together on the show.
Well this week is the time and as always Juan did not disappoint, putting me on lots of Yellowfin Tuna and a very HOT Striped Marlin. The sea was alive with pods of dolphins and Juan was quick to show us a great time.
It is obvious that after 20 years of fishing together he is still jumping for fun!
Tune In Thursday 10:30am EST – NBC Sports
SHOT Show 2012

Most people have never heard of the SHOT Show or if they have they aren’t really sure what it is! SHOT, as regular attenders call it, is the most amazing trade show I’ve ever been to anywhere. If you have had the occasion to go to the ICAST fishing show some July that is impressive but take that times 10 and you have SHOT. More than 60,000 attendees, with some 300 vendors from all over the world and over 12,000 firearms all in the same building! BTW, no one is ever shot at the SHOT Show! Some of the booths at SHOT are 50′ X 100′ and two stories, with catering on the second floor!
Every conceivable hunting, shooting and outdoor accessory you can imagine is here including a tactical section that is 5 acres in area. If you need to supply your local gun shop or Banana Repulic army this is the place to make those connections and get what need require. Ever seen a set of shotguns for $332,000? They have it at SHOT!
How about the 50 Caliber Sniper Rifle that holds the current long distance record? See the Tactical Section! BTW, it the record is some 2,706 yards …yep, about a mile and a half confirmed. In the tactical section most attendees are dressed in black and have that “Soldier of Fortune” look about them.
If you plan to attend SHOT it is best to decide what you want to see at the Show before wandering around because if you spent a minute at each booth it will take you some three weeks to complete. Hope to get some good pix these next few days for you all! BANG!!!
Operation Outdoors…

Every once in awhile you hear or see something that really hits home with you. Operation Outdoors is just such a thing for me. Started by good friend Jarrett Edwards and his wife Rebecca, Operation Outdoors helps Wounded Warriors to heal thru getting them back outdoors doing the things they love.
The Edward’s donated a brand new Phoenix bass boat the first year with some 4,000+ signatures of US Veterans and this year will donate a new Ford F-150 ECO Boost pick up to the cause. To get involved see the link below or better yet donate to the Lone Survivor Foundation at this address (www.LoneSurvivorFoundation.org)

Tying something new…

Just came back from the Denver Fly Show and I was amazed as always with the cornucopia of fly tiers in the house. There must have been 50 pro tiers with there vices cranking out cool stuff!
This could be very intimidating to me and perhaps you too but let me try and encourage you to tie something new! Copying someone else’s patterns are great but I would encourage you to adapt and try some new stuff. One thing I saw eat the show was some cool new materials and new ways to tie them. People are really pushing the envelope of what constitutes a “fly” it seems!
So get out your vice, dust it off and crank out a new bug or two then get out and get it wet. There is nothing quite as satisfying as catching a nice fish our you own stuff!
